Toilet box

Postby Steph&Khan on Sun Feb 07, 2010 10:05 pm

Hey... I was just wondering if it would be possible to build a wooden crate (fairly big) for in the garden and to train Khan to go to the toilet in there. We were planning on filling it with bark. It's just because I have guinea pigs and in the summer they will be going out on the grass again but he has killed the majority of it and it won't grow back while he keeps going to the toilet on it.

Has anyone else done anything like this with their dogs? How would I train him to go in the one place? We were looking at Pee Posts but he doesn't cock his leg and he doesn't really mark his scent.

Any advice would be a great help

Just make up a gravelled area in the garden for him and encourage him to do it there in time he will just go there naturally most sheps keep to one area :thumbsup

I guess you could train Khan to use a private area for his poops, might help if you put a bit of one of his poops in the area to encourage him to to there, along with a square of turf that he usually chooses to wee on. You'd probably have to take him to that area each time on a leash, and wait for him to perform, using a cue word such as "Hurry Up" when he goes, and click and treat every time he performs where you want him to go.

I did once try to train one of my dogs to use a particular area, but never had much success.

My dogs have definite areas they prefer to use, Keith goes by the dustbins and at the gate to the field, Stav usually goes just inside the main gates, to mark territory.
Albert, like Keith when he was a puppy, goes by the flowerpots, as far 'inside' the territory as he can get. :loving:

So, if you notice a specific area that Khan prefers, you could put his Loo there and hope for the best.

It might be easier if you simply 'fenced off' an area of your garden and "dedicated" it for the guinea pigs use, making it 'out of bounds' from the dogs' attentions, that way you'd save yourself a lot of hassle :thumbsup

It all depends on how obiedient/trainable your babe is really........

We had concrete bays right outside our back door some years ago which went from 1 side of the garden to the other with the whole area walled and wrought iron railings with gates too.....so all ours were used to going on concrete....

You could do the same in a corner of your garden if you have the room.............anything is worth trying......or do the opposite for your guinea pigs......sectiion THEM an area of grass fenced in..that may be alot easier to creatate and work :thumbsup :dogwa:

I got rid of the grass not long after we got Ria. She loves to dig and the garden was like a stinky bog with only a few tufts of grass left!! We dug out all the grass/mud and replaced it with gravel. Funny thing is, she still 'goes' in the same area :scratch

Tinka always goes in the same area, a gravelled spot between the garage and shed. The only time she doesn't is when it has snowed, presumably because there is no "smell". She weed all over when there was a covering of snow. As soon as the snow started clearing, she was back in the usual spot.

Thanks for the great tips  . I think it would be easy enough to teach Khan to wee in that place, he has a wee word haha. On the other hand, it would be even easier to just section off some of the grass for the guinea pigs. When the dreaded day comes that the guinea pigs have gone to another place (they are old now but hanging on) my mam wants to get rid of the grass, which I think is a shame cos I do like having a little bit of grass for khan to lay on. I'll show my mam some of the tips you all gave me and i'll let her decide :thumbsup Thanks alot
