food,fussie gsd pup

Postby bethgsd on Sat Feb 06, 2010 7:18 pm

Hi , we have a 6mnth old bitch gsd , who in the breeders was fed on pets at home dried large breed food, when she came home we slowly introduced her onto jms wellbelvd puppy but on viisting our vet he said to feed her something large breed so we changed slowly over to royal canine gsd maxi , amd shes been on it ever since.
However seren has never been a huge food eater at meals times, and this last week she was a little sick on wed morn , then at breakfast she would not eat it so i put it down to her belly being upset , i tried her with her lunch time meal at about 2pm and she wouldnt touch that either , tea at 6.30pm was no go either , she ate a bit but hardley anything !
Thursdat turned out the same , we did manage to bascially force feed her some , but not much and then friday she had the runs at night , but fine in self !
Today [sat] i have cooked amp chicken for her and amp fish , and she had plain fish for brekkies , chicken which she actually ate every bit of with a full cup of her biscs in , by herself , then for tea tonite she had fish and bisc but took a lot of coaxing again !
Shes eating a little couple of treats ,and just seems normal in her self but i dont knwo what else to try , obv i dont want a fussie eater , and with three other dogs the food cant be left down .
Im hoping today may have stimulated her a bit into eating and tommrow , we'll just have to see hwta happens.
Any ideas on this :?

Some pups can get picky over what they'll eat, and they'll have you tearing your hair out finding tasty morsels to tempt them with.
Do yourself a favour and get a stool specimen from her and get it tested for Coccydia, Giardia and Campylobacter.
More often than not, even a subclinical infection will be the cause.
I personally don't rate any of the kibbles you mentioned in your post, and would recommend Orijen large breed puppy.

all of my dogs the last 5 anyway have been fed jwb'd and theyve done great , amber my gsd bitch had an allergy last year so was fed raw for a few months but as we know its not the diet shes now back on jwb'd turkey and veg and is doing just fine!
I think every one has there own idea about what food to give and we're happy with how our dogs are health wise on jwb , they all have shiny coats and are in great condition so we'll be eventually putting seren on that whens shes 12mnths old.

I dont see a point in changing diets around if the dogs are good on it , my mums gsd jade whos 8 has probably only been to the vet once during 2009 for a booster and our old lab is 12.5yrs , shes been on it since a puppy and so has jade .
Amber was brought up on hills chicken puppy large breed and seren now on royal canin!!

obviously if she doesnt eat tommrow propley then she will go to the vet ,

Beth, you were asking for opinions......

She was unwell on Wednesday, and on Thursday....

..... and my opinion is, you have a poorly puppy.
I'm glad your other dogs are doing well on the kibble you feed, but in your own words, you say that your pup

, so it may be that the RC just isn't the food that is best for her.
Just my opinion
Hope Seren gets sorted out and eating better soon

The Royal Canin stuff you're feeding her, is it a puppy version or for adult dogs? Just a thought but if it isn't puppy food then maybe it's a bit too much for her on a puppy tummy?

hi , think she was just having a fussy mom, as yesterday we fed her cooked Amp fish and cooked Amp chicken , she was naughty with the fish but the chicken and royal canin, didnt touch the sides, this morn shes had the chicken again and her usual amountof bisc and didnt even lift her head out of the bowl , she ate the lot!!! No sikness since wed morn and only one bout of diarrhoea, shes fine in her slef and we're going to give her some more chicken tonight , think thath she is just being fussy with what she likes and doesnt but if she'll eat the chicken then she can have it !!1 :thumbsup

have taken seren to the vet , yesterday , shes been given a injection ,some lomitol and pro kolin paste , and he wants to see her back on friday if no better !
Today shes eaten two bowls of fish and rice , and shes had two doseages of paste and two lomitol tablets , shes due to have another with her tea later .
Today the lomitol has worked , as she hasnt had a poo, but i dont really want it to go so far that shes constipated, the paste will coat her gut and hopefully fill it with good bacteria , shes more like herself now, busily playing with amber !
Shes fine in herself, and eating fine, vet said her belly was gasy yesterday , she had no tempreture and so he wasnt overly worried , we'll see how she goes now!
